Engineering a 70-Tonne Grid-Battery Excavator

Sometimes it’s the size that counts.

The 70-tonne excavator is based on a Hitachi ZX690LCH-7 and adapted to Nasta’s PeakShaver+ concept. As an NRMM electrification partner, Hevtec engineered the machine-level integration of battery and grid power into one controlled system.

The Starting Point

The contractor needed a 70-tonne electric excavator that could operate from the grid while retaining enough battery capacity for cable-free movement and peak power support.

Nasta’s conversion of the Hitachi ZX690LCH-7 provided the right platform for the solution.

According to Jostein Ytreland, Chief Engineer at Vassbakk & Stol, the machine’s 1,000 V system and 300 kWh onboard battery provide the flexibility needed for rigging and cable-free movement. Through PeakShaver+, the battery also acts as a buffer for the power grid.

How PeakShaver+ Works

PeakShaver+ combines grid power with onboard battery capacity. The machine can operate on battery power for approximately one hour, allowing cable-free movement between power points and during loading for transport.

When connected to the grid, the battery supports the machine during power peaks. Depending on the available grid connection, the cable supplies 60–100% of the required power, while the battery provides the remainder.

The Result: Heavy-Duty Operation at Rogfast

The first ZE690 was delivered to Vassbakk & Stol in December 2024 for the Rogfast project. At Arsvågen, it handles rock from an intermediate stockpile and loads it onto barges for onward transport.

“The machine will go on the Rogfast project, on an intermediate stockpile of stone at Arsvågen. Here it will handle loading rock masses onto barges for onward sea transport. Up until now, loading has been done electrically on barges with front-end excavators, but due to the range and capacity, handling of intermediate stockpile will require a back-end excavator solution of this size.”

Electrification Built Through Collaboration

The ZE690 was developed through close cooperation between Nasta, Vassbakk & Stol and the project partners. For Nasta, it is the largest electric machine delivered to date.
